Pandemic Is No Match for Dean Vang’s Farewell Gift

The safety requirements of the COVID19 conditions prevented Bethesda from organizing a farewell party suitable to commemorate Dean Vang’s successful and consequential tenure as our Interim Rector. His time with us ended on May 31, 2020. But that would not stop his many Bethesda friends from marking the occasion.

Creativity was deployed, with the goal of involving as many people as possible. A Memory Book was conceived. Notices soliciting messages were circulated via email and telephone in May, with returns coordinated through Parish Administrator Barbara Latzko and Vestry member Karen Finkbeiner. All forms of letters and testimonials, dozens of them, were received, lovingly placed into plastic sleeves and bound into in a fancy binder by Sharon Boyd. The sumptuous collection of letters, cards, pictures, and email testimonials produced by Dean Vang’s admirers from 7 to 90+ became a true and meaningful record of his impact on our lives, leading Bethesda and all of us to a closer walk with God.

The book was presented to him by Senior Warden Darren Miller during a Zoom coffee hour on May 31. We all agreed at that time that an event would be held eventually in his honor where more could be said in thanks for his leadership during this lengthy transition period.

PS. The book was designed to allow for “late arrivals,” so anyone who wishes to contribute, may still do so by sending a note to the parish office, 96 Ballston Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, or emailing to Either way, the message will get to Dean Vang and be included in the book.
