Vestry Resolution – Mercy House

RESOLUTION OF THE VESTRY at its regular monthly meeting September 19, 2018

ON A MOTION OF Mr. Miller, Senior Warden, Seconded by Ms. Berheide, Junior Warden.

WHEREAS, Bethesda, through its Vestry and congregation, has advanced plans for the new parish house adjacent to the church, receiving approval of our plans from the City of Saratoga Springs, and

WHEREAS, the Vestry desires to further the mission of Bethesda in the new parish house by providing supportive housing and shelter for people in need in the Saratoga Springs area, and

WHEREAS, a number of non-profit organizations have entered into Letters of Intent with Bethesda to effectuate this mission by working with us to accommodate as our guests, race track backstretch workers, military veterans, people with substance use disorders or mental illness, and victims of domestic violence, all of whom might otherwise be homeless or otherwise in need of safety and shelter, and

WHEREAS, the Vestry and congregation broadly agree and are committed to this mission as a means to reflect God’s mercy in the world, and to meet the appeal of Our Lord in the Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapter 25: 34 – 36 to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger and care for the sick, and

WHEREAS, the Vestry takes it as a blessing from God that Bethesda has the location, resources and support to develop this permanent response to ongoing human need in our community, and

WHEREAS, the Vestry additionally takes seriously its responsibility to prudently manage the gifts, resources and administrative affairs of the parish, so that this expansion of our mission is undertaken with due regard to sustainability and effectiveness, and

WHEREAS, the Vestry has found that creating an affiliated but separate non-profit corporation named Mercy House of Saratoga, Inc., to manage the supportive housing and shelter in the new parish house is the best way to pursue our mission and implement the scriptural demands on us as Christians, and

WHEREAS, bylaws and incorporation measures have been developed by expert outside counsel and reviewed by the Vestry, NOW THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, that the Vestry of Bethesda Episcopal Church finds the proposed bylaws acceptable and intends to perform its responsibilities in naming both the initial and the permanent Directors of Mercy House of Saratoga, Inc. and such other actions as are called for in said bylaws, and

RESOLVED, that the Senior Warden is directed to execute such agreements and documents as may be required to effectuate this Resolution.
